Programme Note:
A Celt on the Great Wall is a fantasy piece in which a Celt (someone of Irish decent) explores the Great Wall. The piece is programmatic in nature but the plot, time period, and various other details are left to the imagination of the listener. The first movement is a slow sentimental exploration of the legend of Meng Jiang Nu (孟姜⼥) using the folk song of the same name and the Irish folk song The Kesh Jig.The more upbeat second movement explores the more heroic and majestic history of the Great Wall. Written in sonata form, this movement uses two original themes, one in a Chinese folk style and the other in an Irish folk style. There is a short interlude in which two more folk songs are introduced and become intertwined: Feng Yang (凤阳花鼓) and The Minstrel Boy.

Programme Note:
One of my earliest memories from when I first began studying Chinese music years ago was hearing Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin performed effortlessly on the erhu. Prior to that experience I had heard the erhu only in a traditional Chinese folk music context, and I was awed by the versatility and ability of the instrument to display such a decidedly Western style of virtuosity. Four Short Poems was inspired by this approach of adapting assorted 'Western' musical gestures to the erhu, though the set is not intended to be a virtuosic showpiece. Rather, the four brief movements (1. flight of fancy, 2. green sheep tango, 3. air; 4. wall of joy) feature the erhu and piano in various ways, ranging in character from quirky to serene to exuberant.

This song cycle is about the experience of time. The first movement, "Dusk", is ostensibly about looking over the day just past, but is clearly about much more. "Hubbards Cove" is about a particular kind of joyful being-in-the-moment. "Daybreak" is an unsentimental look back at early childhood from maturity.

Programme Note:
How long can we continue to accumulate the weight of history? Every year, every day, every moment even, is an addition to our past. Coming with this weight is an incredible inertia and with this a sense of the inevitability of events. History seems to push on, repeating itself, cycling through set patterns even while accompanied by a sense of progress and growth. A text read by the pianist comes from Gertrude Stein’s ‘We came. A history’, written in 1930 and characterized by a highly unusual presentation: the final 3/4 of the text is written completely as short bursts of words joined together by equal signs. (“How do you like what you have heard=History must be distinguised=From mistakes.=History must not be about=What is happening.=History must not be about=dogs and balls in all.=The meaning of those=Words. History must be= , etc) The weight of these words through this expression is countered by a considered acceptance and appreciation of the inevitability of historical events: “History is what it is=which it is as they do.” ‘One says. History is’ attempts to address the weight and inertia of history, an address coloured by the recent events in Iraq. The acceptance of the inevitability of history is perhaps not as easy in this work as with Stein’s. Virtuosic, physical playing gives way over the three movements (each much shorter than the previous) to a more resigned, wistful expression. ‘One says. History is’ was written for the tremendous talents of pianist Marc Couroux.

20 April 2003, Casa del Popolo, Montreal, Québec
Marc Couroux, piano

The Bushwakker Brewpub is a place where friends gather to have a good time, talking, eating, and indulging in the wonderful varieties of brews that make it one of the favorite brewpubs in Regina. Each movement of this suite is named after one of the beers brewed and served at the Bushwakker Brewpub. I’ve always found these names to be so imaginative that they invoke scenes and people: Stubblejumper Pilsener (two crusty old farmers getting together for a beer and an argument); Northern Lights Lager (quite minimalist with the shifting chord patterns like the shifting colors of the Northern Lights); Screamin' Mosquito Chili Beer (a bit of "Tex/Mex" bothered by a pesky mosquito); Last Mountain Lager (the grand panorama of the Rocky Mountains); MacGregor's Wee Heavy (ending with a Scottish reel), and India Pale Ale (the steady rhythm of the raga broken by an occasional flourish of individual instruments). Due to requests by a number of musicians, there are several versions of this piece: clarinet, horn and piano; clarinet, trombone and piano; clarinet, saxophone and piano; and trumpet, trombone and piano.
