This year, choirs across Canada are launching productions for the centenary of Armistice Day, musically marking 100 years since the end of the First World War. As Artistic Director of Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir of Ottawa, I was one of many conductors who last year worked on planning and programming for this important landmark, and in anticipation of this had dreamed of a new large-scale work for women’s choir and orchestra that would speak to women’s experiences of the Great War.

This concert of Baltic music will feature the sonorous sounds and incredible virtuoso capabilities of Spiritus Chamber Choir. Guest conductor, Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff, will lead the choir along with special guests, Sara Staples, mezzo-soprano and Cheryl Emery, piano. Dr. Ratzlaff was named to a Member of the Order of Canada in 2011, in recognition of his work as a conductor and professor at the University of Alberta.

Description:

Presenting four young soloists, this concerto concert has become an audience favourite over the years. The Calgary Concerto Competition (C3) is an annual competition that is open to all instrumental students under the age of 18 who are studying with a Calgary music teacher.

For most of them, this is their debut performance with orchestra. Past winners include Canada’s prominent pianist/composer Heather Schmidt; cellist Arnold Choi, and internationally renowned piano virtuoso Jan Lisiecki. This is the 33rd year of the Calgary Civic Symphony hosting the C3 winners’ concert.

Join us for music to celebrate the season. Featured on this programme are two favourites for women’s choir and harp: Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies, which also features guitar and marimba. Enjoy beautiful settings of the Magnificat by Healey Willan and Christine Donkin, Donald Patriquin’s Carol of the Field Mice, and other seasonal works by Canadian composers Alexander Tilley, Howard Cable, and Eleanor Daley.
