In a vibrant celebration of multi-culturalism, Laudate Singers performs three world premieres by Marco Del Rio and Farshid Samandari and a grand variety of folk and contemporary pieces in a dozen languages.

A wonderful tapestry of sounds, languages and thoughts from countries as diverse as Iran, England, Latvia, China, Russia, Poland and more, set in the stunning Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art. The Tapestry Weavers Interest Group and Silver Harbour Tapestry Weavers will also be displaying their work.

Building on last year’s concert at the Pan-Am Pool, the Winnipeg New Music Festival continues its exploration of alternative spaces and local histories, this time at the iconic Hudson’s Bay Building. Winnipeg Sony Classical recording artist and Continuous Music pianist Lubomyr Melnyk will be presenting a new live music and film collaboration with the National Ballet based on the paintings of Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris. The Cecilia String Quartet will perform two new commissions, and the Winnipeg Chamber Music Society will give the world premiere of Alexina Louie’s new Piano Quintet.

Well we have all survived the first day. Not just the cast, but my son and his babysitter too.

We began on Monday by meeting the crew and the rest of the technical team. We had a tour of the York theatre and our safety briefing. The director, Norman Armour, spoke to us about setting up his vision for the piece and how we can enhance this along with the artistic team.

Canadian composer Elizabeth Knudson is back home again in Vancouver after a recent trip to Albania with Oliver de Clercq (principal horn, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra).
