Programme Note:
Eurydice reimagined: When speaking of myth, what might an ancient love-story reveal for our local situation: city of harbours, hemmed by an inlet, by mountains, site of arrival—where extraction of resources means engagement with powerful forces? In the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, what seeds might burgeon into a new re-telling? For me, this past winter, the letter E, for energy, for earth, surged into this story of loss at that most poignant of threshold moments: to look behind!—the more I read into myth, the more she came to me: an eco-resistance-warrior-princess, tunneling up through rock and concrete, insistent that I pay attention and ask: what’s happening on the mountain? ~Renée Sarojini Saklikar I found the message and amazing images in Renée’s poem very inspiring musically. The final text is a condensation of a longer poem. In adapting, my goal was to focus on the story line of Eurydice as eco-warrior returning to the world, specifically Burnaby Mountain (her earthly home) to protect it from current environmental threats. Eurydice here manifests in several different characteristics: idealistic young protestor, timeless aboriginal Earth Mother, fragile lost girl of myth, innocent folk singer, avenging angel. Each aspect of her personality is represented musically, tied together by a fragment from Gluck’s “Dance of the Blessed Spirits.” ~ William George

Programme Note:
'The Brain' was written for tenor voice, bass clarinet, and piano, with text based on a poem of the same name, by American poet, Emily Dickinson. It was premiered at Simon Fraser University Theatre (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada), in March 2003.

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
With ease—and You—beside—
The Brain is deeper than the sea—
For—hold them—Blue to Blue—
The one the other will absorb—
As Sponges—Buckets—do—
The Brain is just the weight of God—
For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—
And they will differ—if they do—
As Syllable from Sound—

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Programme Note:
I was delighted when I was approached by Phil Candelaria to write a piece for the Canadian Guitar Quartet. I had always wanted to write a piece for them and looked forward to the project. Before I got started, though, the quartet asked me to consider a variation – a piece for Mezzo Soprano and guitar quartet to be performed by the quartet and Julie Nesrallah. I eagerly agreed, since song writing is my first passion. As I often have, I searched for text in the work of Susan McMaster, the Ottawa poet whose work I have used for False Spring, Uncommon Prayers, and, more recently, Gold and Glory. The text I chose was one that Sue wrote in honour of her daughter Aven’s wedding in 2000. My goal was to write a piece that was exuberant and joyful, like the text. It’s essentially in E major (with a few extra notes). As it turned out, Julie Nesrallah was unable to do the premiere. CBC moved her to Toronto. One concert was planned at Hart House but then her schedule changed at the last minute. At that point Whitney O’Hearn stepped in brilliantly! Of Glad Love was premiered Nov. 15, 2015 at the Saint-Alexandre College Studio in Gatineau by Whitney O’Hearn and the Canadian Guitar Quartet.

Event Title: Elixir Ensemble
  • Region: Prairie
  • Venue / Location: Emmanuel Anglican Church, 609 Dufferin Ave., Saskatoon
  • Time: 2:30pm
  • Price: $10-25
  • Genre: Mixed Chamber Ensembles (1-9 Performers)

Description:

Stephen Chatman (1950- ): Lawren Harris Suite
Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924): Piano Quintet in D minor Op. 89
Robert Schumann (1810-1856): Piano Quintet in E flat Major Op. 44

Three landscape paintings of the celebrated Lawren Harris, one of the famous Group of Seven artists, are musically evoked in this Canadian work by Stephen Chatman. The Fauré Quartet is a mature work that seems to mirror subtly changing moods, from sweet melancholy – perhaps regret – to a bubbly and lucid finale. His flowing textures bring to mind the beautiful colours and plays of light of a Renoir painting.
