Founded in 1983 as the second-youngest branch of the Canadian Music Centre, CMC-Ontario works province-wide to advance the CMC’s mandate: to promote the music of our Associate Composers, to encourage the performance and appreciation of Canadian music, and to make this music widely available and accessible around the world.
CMC-Ontario serves the largest population of professional composes within the CMC network, just over 240 music creators. For these Associates, CMC-Ontario delivers a balanced portfolio of programs, projects and services to help promote and distribute their music for performance, recording, broadcast, research and general appreciation.
In conjunction with the National Office, CMC-Ontario provides public access to the Ettore Mazzoleni Library, a free lending collection of 18,000 scores and performance parts written by over 680 CMC Associate Composers. The Library also makes available for perusal a significant collection of Associate Composer reference files, music periodicals, reference books, over 9,000 tracks of archival audio and hundreds of commercial CDs, much of which is unique to the CMC.
CMC-Ontario also provides a series of other public services, including:
- Encouraging and answering questions and requests regarding Canadian music;
- Providing customized consultations, including the preparation of repertoire lists;
- Acting as a liaison between Ontario-based Associate Composers and the public;
- Creating opportunities to connect composers to their communities; and
- Publishing information about Canadian music online and via Ontario Notations.
Furthermore, CMC-Ontario works in partnership with numerous arts organizations to develop greater awareness and appreciation of our Associate Composers’ music through special projects such as:
- CentreVisits
- Composer Companions
- The Norman Burgess Memorial Fund
- New Music in New Places
CMC-Ontario is conveniently located on the main floor of Chalmers House in downtown Toronto. We are here to inform and to serve you. Our doors, phone lines and e-mail boxes are open for you. Come and browse through our collections. Listen and purchase from over 1,000 CDs or just touch base and catch up with the latest new music news. We’d be more than happy to see and to hear from you!
