February 12, 2014

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to listen to over 13,000 archival recordings/streams.

Step 1

Log in or Create an Account in the top right-hand corner of our website at You have to be logged in to be able to access Centrestreams.

Step 2

1) Accessing Centrestreams from a Composer Showcase page.

You can search for the composers you are interested in listening to by entering their name directly into the white search field at the top right of the browser page or you can search by clicking on COMPOSERS in the black menu bar. Within the COMPOSERS page you can search for composers by alphabetical order or by using the Quick Search field.

Once you have found the COMPOSER SHOWCASE page of the composer you are interested in. You will see a CENTRESTREAMS box on the right. Click on Listen Now in red to be redirected to all our audio streams for that specific composer.

2) Composer Showcase page, Complete Holdings tab

You can also search all archival recordings under the Complete Holdings tab. Within the Complete Holding page you can organize works by call number. Click on the Call Number title at the top of the column. All call numbers will appear in alphabetical order. All AR call numbers are archival recordings or full audio streams that you can listen to.

Click on the title of the work in red to be redirected to the catalogue page. Once you click on the title of work, you will see a Listen Now box for that specific piece.

3) Composer Showcase page, Sheet Music tab

If you are interested in the sheet music of a work and want to see if there’s an audio stream available for that piece, click on the Sheet Music tab. This will take you to the composers complete list of works available through the Canadian Music Centre. Click on the title of the work you are interested in.

If you see a Centrestreams box on that catalogue page with a Listen Now button, then the CMC has the audio stream of this work. If the box is not there, we do not have an archival recording of this work. You can also scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if there are any commercial recordings of this work for sale.

4) Advance Search

To access our Advance Search section of our website, click on Advance Search under the white search field at the top right-hand corner of the browser page. Proceed to the Sheet Music tab.

You can combine various searches within this section. For example you can type in John Weinzweig in to the composer field and check the box that says Must have CentreStreams recording and click on search to receive a complete list of works available through the centre that have audio streams.

You can also combine the instrumentation search with the Must have CentreStreams recording box selected to get a complete list of works available through the centre that also have audio streams.

Step 3

Once you are on the Centrestreams window, you can scroll up and down using the arrows on the side or you can jump from track to track using the forward and back buttons on the bottom.
