Post-genre meltdowns create post-classical music that melts down genre affiliations

Our final Emergents show of the season is curated by one of Toronto’s most notable up and coming composers, Nick Storring. Nick has played our X Avant festival and appeared in a number of ensembles over the years. His expansive musical spirit spans pop (Piege, Picastro), improvisation (I Have Eaten The City, The Knot) electroacoustic ideas (as represented on his terrific album Rife) and “world music”, a term he loves to deconstruct. His programming for this concert brings together a wide variety of neophytes exploring contemporary classical forms.

Toronto’s Thin Edge New Music Collective, now in its third concert season, will be presenting a diverse program of new compositions by musicians whose primary focus lies outside of typical chamber music channels. Los Angeles-based Sean McCann is a fixture in the American noise and ambient underground but has recently shifted to a more chamber-oriented palette. Colin Fisher is one of Toronto’s finest improvisers and multi instrumentalists. Liz Hysen started Picastro in 1998, a group known for its unsettling string-heavy arrangements. Matthew Ramolo, aka Khôra, weaves together electronic and acoustic textures with grace and idiosyncracy. Araz Salek is a virtuoso on the tar and performs Persian classical music worldwide.

Thin Edge’s ensemble for the evening features its two artistic directors Cheryl Duvall (piano) and Ilana Waniuk (violin) alongside Kathryn Ladano (bass clarinet), and Nathan Petitpas (percussion).

Jason Doell (composer) and Germaine Liu (percussion) are active in numerous areas including ensemble writing, improvisation and collaborations within different artistic fields. Here they collaborate in a compositional and performative capacity to present a new work which “teases the ringing, screeching, rattling and creaking out of usual and unusual sound sources as they maneuver through a set of movement scenarios in order to create a path or paths of sonic events.”

THE EMERGENTS SERIES IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY ROGER D. MOORE.
