Click here to download full work (7.16 Mb - Not printable)Programme Note:TThis piece is inspired by the well-known Celtic song The Last Rose of Summer (1805 poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore on a melody composed by George Alexander Osborne), a metaphor for nostalgia and loneliness in the autumn of life. The melodic theme is heard in the opening and in varied form in the reprise. The middle section, in the minor mode, has more flowing movement but contains the main theme in inversion in the organ pedal part. It is combined with another song of reminiscence of youthful times, the 18th century Comin’ Through the Rye (poem by Robert Burns and melody of the Scottish Common' Frae The Town). Duration of work: ca. 9 minutes The work was written for the well-known Edmonton keyboard duo Duo Majoya (Dr. Marnie Giesbrecht and Joachim Segger) who premiered it in the Edmonton Winspear Centre on September 9, 2012.My sincere thanks to Trent Worthington who prepared the digital print setting.
