Programme Note:
Peter Paul Koprowski

Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, 1982

Commissioned by: Per Øien, with the assistance of the Canada Council

“The flute part of the concerto is undoubtedly one of the most difficult in the repertoire. Koprowski was full of surprises, and even incorporated chance music into his orchestral writing…” Niall O’Rourke, Calgary Herald, September 26, 1988

“Koprowski mixes a 12-tone row that scarcely gives itself away, indirect references to Stravinsky, and lengthy and virtuosic solos for members of the orchestra that included an endlessly descending trombone solo… The most dramatic material occurs in the orchestra... The romantic solo flute lines that break out of the intensity of the orchestra are anchored to themselves, anachronistic, obsessive in an attempt to open out without changing shape.” Elissa Poole, The Globe and Mail, February 17, 1995

Koprowski writes that in this Flute Concerto he “shadowed and reacted on some of [Stravinsky’s] most compelling themes, never quoting, but marking their presence.” This is a work that composer Witold Lutoslawski praised for its “outstanding use of colors, drama, and architecture… and absolute control of the symphony orchestra”; and flautist Per Øien (who premiered the work) described it as “the most substantial concerto since Carl Nielsen’s.”
