Srul Irving Glick

Suite Hebraique #5, 1980

Commissioned by: Camerata, with the assistance of the Canada Council

Premiered by: Camerata, Toronto, May 4, 1980

“… a stimulating and economically scored work […]. The three movements were a likable dance movement, a deeply felt lament, and a well-controlled wedding dance. There was a handsome solo for each instrument, and an imaginative facility in interweaving their different timbres.” Ronald Hambleton, Toronto Star, May 5, 1980

“In this three-movement work, Glick blends classical style with musical elements from his Jewish heritage. The result is lyrical and appealing in its presentation of traditionally inspired melodies, regular phrasing, and clear overall structure. Each of the three movements is based on a melody he had written previously, and each bears a dedication: ‘Circle Dance’ to his nephew Eliot (the melody was written for his bar mitzvah), ‘Prayer and Chasidic Dance’ to honour cantor Harold Klein, and ‘Wedding Dance’, the melody of which was written for the wedding of Irving and Helena Grossman. Each of the four instrumentalists is provided with an extended solo cadenza at some point in the composition.”
