Programme Note:
Piece Percussionique No. 3 is the third in a projected series of percussion ensemble works. It was composed in 1966 and is in three connected movements: Allegretto (con fugato), Andante, Allegro (rondo). This composition progresses from humour in the first movement that subsides in the Andante, to the seriousness of the Allegro, although it actually has a prankish drum rhythm as its rondo theme. A xylophone cadenza separates the first two movements, both of which have strange musical and quasi theatrical gestures interpolated into rather conventional rhythmic writing. By movement three no theatrical gestures remain. Although these gestures are visually entertaining, they do produce different sounds. Yet both the audio and visual elements are equal in weight and importance. The rapid 6/8 tempo (in a fast 2) of movement three brings the work to a close with great virtuosity.

Piece Percussionique No. 3 was first performed at my coming-out concert on September 12, 1966, in Baird Recital Hall on the State University of New York at Buffalo Main Street campus. The performers were James Santella, William A. Thiele and Jan Williams.
A modest revision was made in 2007 as the work was computer-engraved and in preparation for the Toronto Percussion Ensemble recording. Some old notational inconsistencies were cleaned up in the process. Greater attention was given to dynamic markings. The original metronome speeds in movements one and two were slowed slightly. The xylophone cadenza and the final coda received a modest lengthening. A few new “inserts” were added to movements two and three to extend their overall length. Finally the Meno mosso C section of the rondo was simplified.
