Programme Note:
The three movements of this piece reflect different aspects of the East, as imagined through the ears of a North American composer. Tangier represents the meeting point of North African and Spanish cultures. Petra is an ancient Nabatean city in Jordan that I had the opportunity to visit in 2000, and Tangboche is a Tibetan monastery in the Himalayas of Nepal that was the subject of a film documentary for which I wrote the musical score.
While the music is intended to be evocative of these places, it can also be thought of as a personal journey into distant regions of the mind.
