KUZMENKO - Skartaris Duo Concerto world premiere

Pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico joins violinist Marc Djokic, Sinfonia Toronto and Maestro Nurhan Arman for the world premiere of the duo concerto, “Skataris”, written for Petrowska Quilico by Larysa Kuzmenko.

Petrowska Quilico writes about Kuzmenko: “Her music is always inspiring to perform. This is the second concerto she has written for me. I played the first concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony, Bramwell Tovey and the Toronto Symphony, Jukka Pekka Saraste. It is recorded on Centrediscs and was nominated for a Juno. She knows my playing very well so the writing highlights all my strengths which is wonderful as a performer. The difference between the concertos is that this concerto is for piano and violin. I love chamber music and asked her to write me something extremely different from the very virtuosic first concerto which is scored for full symphony. Skartaris (inspired by a volcano in Iceland) is very subtle, moody and atmospheric. Of course there are virtuoso moments for both the violin and piano but it is really more of a chamber music concerto, which I love as well. There are so many different tonal colours in the piece and I can visualize painting while playing to bring out all the sensitive nuances in the music. Can't wait to play it.”

Also on the program are works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, and the North American premiere of Letter from an Unknown Woman by Airat Ichmouratov.
