Hyacinth Caelum by Canadian composer Rolf Boon is another of the Sesquies composed to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday. The work illustrates Lethbridge’s geography and cultural heritage; and its title is a reference to the blue skies that typically adorn the city’s prairie environment.

Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80: One of Gabriel Fauré's works of the last years of the 19th century that included incidental music for the English premiere of Maurice Maeterlinck's Pelléas et Mélisande, a Symbolist play about forbidden love.

Firebird Suite (1919), by Igor Stravinsky was a resounding success at the Paris premiere, and remained Stravinsky's most popular work for half a century. Stravinsky himself conducted hundreds of performances of The Firebird, mainly in the form of the suites, of which the 1919 version became the best known.

Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic in this our fourth and penultimate concert of the 2018 – 2019 season. Fantastic Firebird takes place on Sunday, April 7th at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. The pre-concert chat/recital will commence at 1:45 pm.

The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
