Janice Isabel Jackson wins the 2018 Friends of Canadian Music Award

August 7, 2018

The Canadian League of Composers/La Ligue Canadienne des Compositeurs and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) are pleased to announce Janice Isabel Jackson as the winner of the 2018 Friends of Canadian Music Award.

Every year, the Friends of Canadian Music Award honours those who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment, on a national scale, to Canadian composers and their music. The CMC and CLC jointly administer and present this award. The Friends of Canadian Music Award is in the amount of $2000. The award is divided as follows: $1000 for the recipient and $1000 for an early-career composer or composition student of the recipient’s choice. This split is to help support a promising composer in the early stages of their career. Janice Isabel Jackson has chosen to share the award with composer Sophie Dupuis.

A jury consisting of Evelin Ramón (Q.C.), Richard Gibson (N.B.), John Abram (Prairie), and Fiona Ryan (N.S.), convened to review the current nominations for the award. Juror and CLC Awards Committee Chair Richard Gibson noted of Jackson’s accomplishments:

Her deep commitment to the commissioning, performing, and encouragement of new compositions by Canadian composers created an extremely favourable impression among all members of the jury. In addition, her organisational skill and the tremendous expenditure of energy accorded to the presentation of high quality performances of Canadian contemporary music in Atlantic Canada and elsewhere were very favourably noted.

The CLC and CMC will publicly present the joint award to Jackson and Dupuis during the @opera from scrat Opera From Scratch Gala Concert on August 19, 2018 at 3:00pm ADT at Saint Matthews United Church, 1479 Barrington Street Halifax, Nova Scotia. Come show your support for Jackson and hear six new world premiere mini operas about our history and culture by a talented group of composers and singers hailing from Canada, The USA, and Sweden.
