On January 13th, PEI's new music ensemble eklektikos will present a chamber music recital featuring several works composed since 2000, including two by PEI composers. Richard Covey’s Improvvisando, his second work for trombone and piano, is a beautifully expressive meditation on the hymn Go To Dark Gethsemane. Covey, a professor at the UPEI Music Dept., will be the pianist for this performance, alongside eklektikos’ artistic director and trombonist Dale Sorensen. This recital will also pay tribute to a UPEI founder and former music professor Bert Tersteeg, who passed away in December, 2016. Sorensen, along with UPEI alumnus Laura MacLeod (trumpet) will play two of Tersteeg’s instrumental duets composed in 2010.

Also on the program will be a charming suite from a chamber opera, Le Gendarme Incompris, written by the French composer Francis Poulenc in 1920, and two other Canadian works: Aiden Hartery’s Divertimento, based on the familiar Newfoundland folksong The Ryans and the Pittmans, and David MacIntyre’s Intimate Letters, inspired by the idea that the composer’s old leather briefcase was full of music notes that had the sound of “intimate letters from persons unknown”. With this intriguing idea used as a theme, the music on this recital will be interspersed with readings of real or imagined “intimate letters” written by the composers, as a novel way of introducing their works.

Other performers featured in this recital include Karen Graves (violin), Branden Kelly (percussion), Sara Sorensen (clarinet), and Natalie Williams Calhoun (cello).

This performance will take place at Steel Recital Hall, UPEI, Charlottetown, on Saturday, January 13th at 7:30PM. Admission is $20 for adults and seniors, $15 for students, available at the door. Storm date: Sunday, January 14th at 2:30PM.
