The Canadian Music Centre and Musica Reflecta are pleased to present the next installment in our Opus: Testing series featuring new works for voice and live electronics. Pieces will be performed in an informal workshop setting by Adanya Dunn (soprano) and Zach Clark (electronics). Audiences will hear new works, and participate in the dialogue with the artists who have been involved in the workshop.
About the Fall 2016 Assignment: Wei Wu Wei - The Tao Takes The Reins for voice and electronics

The Tao Te Ching is an ancient Chinese philosophical/spiritual text primarily concerned with the art of living well. Apart from informing various schools of thought, the text has been an ongoing source of inspiration for artists in China and elsewhere. Among the ideas explored in the Tao Te Ching is our ability to let go of the need for strict control in life, and trust the motions of the systems in which we take part every day. In working with electronics, many artists and composers have been stimulated by the freedom which comes from interacting with a well-designed, semi-autonomous system, and the thrill of discovering the unknown and unexpected spaces and responses arising from these systems.
For this edition of Opus Testing we invited composers to propose short pieces for live electronics and voice that sets the text among the 81 chapters/verses of the Tao Te Ching.
About Opus: Testing:
Musica Reflecta and the Canadian Music Centre have been collaborating to present Opus: Testing for the past three years. The workshops is an open and safe space for any artist to explore, collaborate, and create.
On a regular basis we offer a new combination of instruments or voices to be the subject of a sketch, a short piece or a vignette (30 seconds to 5 minutes in length). OPUS: TESTING is an experimental safe space to try new things. The object is to encourage musical creators to expand their professional network, and explore new territory in their writing. Participation is voluntary, and any artist is encouraged to submit proposals (you can join the workshop remotely through video conferencing). For this assignment we are pleased to be working with performers Zach Clark and Adanya Dunn, and partnering with the Troubleshooting Concert Series at the Tranzac to present the pieces being developed.
