Rare Opportunity Hear JUNO-nominated RESPONSIO in Halifax

(Halifax, NS) Fans of contemplative music, and those who remember the meditative concerts produced by the Sanctuary Trio will be excited to learn that Nova Scotia composer Peter-Anthony Togni’s RESPONSIO will be presented in Halifax for one live performance only – Monday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. at Fort Massey United Church, 5303 Tobin Street, Halifax. Tickets are on sale now at www.tickethalifax.com, in person at The Coast, 2309 Maynard Street and will be available at the door. They’re $25 regular, $20 for seniors and $10 for students and the under waged.

Nominated for a JUNO Award in 2016 (Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance), as well as the winner of the $25,000 2014 Lieutenant Governor’s Masterworks Award, RESPONSIO is Togni’s breathtakingly beautiful meditation on Guillaume de Machaut’s medieval masterpiece, the Messe de Nostre Dame. Featuring the incomparable bass clarinet of Jeff Reilly soaring over the timeless sonorities of a world-class vocal quartet, the work is a deep reflection on over 1,000 years of spiritual music making. Just under 70 minutes in length, the piece is performed in twelve movements without intermission. You can watch a video about the work here:

The vocal quartet comprises four outstanding singers: Canadians Soprano Suzie Leblanc and Mezzo Andrea Ludwig, and two British tenors: Charles Daniels and John Potter. Following the Halifax performance, the group will perform RESPONSIO in Montreal on April 20. RESPONSIO will be performed also with Luminous Voices in Calgary on May 7.

Renowned Acadian soprano Suzie Leblanc (www.suzieleblanc.com) has had an international career specializing in early baroque repertoire, contemporary and Acadian folk music, and a busy schedule as a performer and recording artist. Mezzo-soprano Andrea Ludwig has appeared with the Canadian Opera Company, many of Canada’s symphony orchestras, and recently recorded eight orchestrated Schubert lieder with Symphony Nova Scotia. Charles Daniel was a member for sixteen years of the early music vocal ensemble the Orlando Consort, and is well known for his opera performances and recordings. John Potter is a singer and author who records for ECM with the Dowland Project and for Hyperion with the Conductus Ensemble. His books on singing are published by Cambridge and Yale University Press.

About RESPONSIO classical music magazine The Wholenote said:
"Composer Peter-Anthony Togni has brilliantly created a soundscape spanning the centuries... The vocal quartet score features beautifully crafted four-part, chant-based writing that transcends stylistic periods, with especially dreamy harmonies and luscious counterpoint in the Machaut-based sections. Bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly is a master of his instrument and the music"

RESPONSIO was released internationally in September of 2015 on the Montreal-based ATMA Classique label. CDs will be available for purchase at the concert.

This concert is presented by Musique Royale and Sanctuary Concerts, with support from the Craig Foundation. Please call (902) 422-6278 for more information.
