Programme Note:
As with many of my works over the past several years, les tissu des suspendus (the fabric of the suspended) takes word and image as catalyst and motivation for sound and impulse. The work oscillates between moments of frenzied activity, driven and intense, and moments of suspension, lingering and elusive. It also represents an ongoing preoccupation with the element of repetition and formal return or refrain in musical and societal structures. The first main section of le tissu des suspendus is driven by running scales in the piano which form a supporting structure for a highly obsessive, constrained flute and pizzicato violoncello theme. This music is abruptly interrupted several times by a high register texture that foreshadows a later, similar treatment of the instruments in a series of refrains, entitled ejecta. These refrains explore a vivid contrast to the predominantly fast and frenzied character of the main sections of the work. After the relative repose of the first ejecta, the violoncello drives incessantly the subsequent runtime section with a perpetuum mobile sixteenth note pulse around which the flute and piano trade rapid flurries of angular pitch collections. After a brief initial climax, the piano takes up the pulse and leads the ensemble to a second ejecta, a variant of the first refrain. nomadia finds the ensemble once again in a state of anxious motion and engaged in rapid, low-register ostinati beneath a struggling, ascending flute theme. An explosive conclusion to this section is tempered by a third ejecta. The main section of the work, le mort des suspendus, marches coolly toward the final moments of the work, summarizing the harmonic language explored during the piece and returning the ensemble to an echo of the opening measures of the work. - Laurie Radford
