L’arbre de Borobudur, 1994

Commissioned by: SMCQ, with the assistance of the Canada Council

“In the centre of Java, at Borobudur, lies a pyramid-shaped Buddhist temple built in the 9th century. As the pilgrim rises through concentric platforms, he comes across low reliefs relating Buddha’s life. It is there, in 1972, that I encountered this extraordinary tree, whose fruits are musical instruments. It seemed to be saying, the music of Man is sublime, but nature’s is even more so. I tried to imagine the wind blowing through this tree’s deep foliage. I tried to hear what this stone tree would evoke. Would it beat like heart?”
