I would like to share with you the news that the Hellenic Heritage Foundation of Canada selected me as the 2014 recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Award was launched in 2012. The first recipients of the Award were Canadian Supreme Court Justice Andromache Karakatsanis and the late Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos, an internationally respected pioneer in nephrology. In recognition of their outstanding achievements and leadership, the recipients were honoured by naming endowed scholarships in their name for Hellenic Studies at York University. In 2013, the Hellenic Heritage Foundation presented the Award to Mike Lazaridis, philanthropist, global business leader and founder of BlackBerry. In honour and recognition of Mike Lazaridis’ exemplary accomplishment Hellenic Heritage Foundation and the Savvas Chamberlain Family Foundation contributed $100,000 in matching funds to create the Anaximandros Fellowship at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo.

I feel quite startled and humbled to be the 2014 recipient. I realize that I have some big shoes to fill, considering the previous recipients of this award, but I am delighted that the arts are now represented in this recognition of accomplishment. I am also delighted by the fact that, as I understand it, there may be some scholarship funds directed by the recipient to an educational institution of the recipient's choice. I will know more about this when I meet with the foundation members and I will make a separate announcement about this aspect of the award when I have more information.

In the meanwhile, a great Thank You to Justice Ria Tzimas, who nominated me for this award and solicited the letters of support for this nomination. Ria is a brilliant jurist who, in the midst of her own meteoric career in law, particularly Aboriginal law (a subject very close to my heart,) she finds the time to support the arts by being the president of the VIVA Youth Singers of Toronto and organize complex nominations like this one. Also a great Thank You to all those who wrote letters of support. These letters made a huge difference in the decision.

Best wishes,
Christos
