Notes de programme :
Anthony Crawford was a prosperous farmer, skillful businessman and civic leader. Actively involved as a leader in his church and community he was committed to helping and encouraging others in many ways. A proponent of education he built a school on his property to ensure the teaching of black children in Abbeville, South Carolina. Despite being born a slave in 1865, he obtained success and initiated progress amidst hardship and tolerated injustice.
His horrific death on October 21, 1916 is unique in the history of lynchings, since Crawford was never accused of any violent crime, and was a prominent member of the community. He was captured, beaten and dragged through the streets. A crowd of hundreds gathered as his body was hung from a tree and shot numerous times. His family was told to leave their land and local black businesses were threatened. This vicious attack was devastating to his family, and to the community. Although an investigation into his murder occurred in 1917, witnesses claimed to be unable to recognize those involved and no one was held accountable. His body was never found.
Following Crawford's murder African Americans left Abbeville in droves. Enough moved to Evanston, IL to populate most of the town. Others moved to Philadelphia, Florida, and in time some returned to Abbeville. For generations the thought of his death was so painful that it was rarely spoken of, and his once close family scattered and lost touch.
Against all odds this story does not end here. In time the family began to find each other, meeting for yearly reunions with relatives from all over the United States. The story of this brutal murder became a rallying point for his descendants whom, on June 14, 2005, received a formal apology from the Senate for failing to make lynching a crime. This was the first time that members of Congress apologized to blacks for any reason. In July of the same year, a service was held in Abbeville, with the Crawford family present, to ask for their forgiveness for this heinous crime that was committed in the Court Square some 89 years previous.
Laws were put into effect to prevent the advancement of African Americans. Sanctioned terror was used to defeat the social, economic and political aspirations of the black community. These obstacles must have seemed insurmountable but Anthony Crawford dared to hope that things could be better. It is true that on this long road progress has been made. Jim Crow laws have been abolished, justice is no longer limited to a select few, and the right to obtain higher education is open to all. As President Obama begins his term in office, it is reasonable to conclude that anything is possible. And yet we haven’t come to the end of the road. There is still progress to be made.
Anthony Crawford was a hardworking, successful, proud man who believed in a future for his family. With his tragic death I’m sure that his murderers thought they brought these dreams to an end, but they were wrong. There is a future. There is hope. As his great-great-granddaughter, Doria Johnson has recorded:
His legacy is something every Black American should be proud of. He once took out an ad in the paper which said :
...and it will be the highest endeavor of our lives, to strive to make as good citizens in the future as we have in the past and to those who opposed and differed with us, I have nothing but a friendly feeling. For individuals as well as nations sometimes differ. But it is mete and right to settle their differences, legally and amicably.
A Citizen, Anthony P. Crawford.
