Notes de programme :
MULTIMUSIC CANADA FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM, FRESCO FOR ORCHESTRA, composed in 1999 is an orchestral version that lasts for about 21 minutes in performance. The six modules are the following:

Genesis, Module I, remarks on the space of Canada before the coming of Europeans. Various musical configurations of First Peoples, Francophones, and Anglophones are used to reflect on the history of their interaction, culminating in the Canadian Confederation of 1867.

Indigenos, Module II, using certain archetypal structures as found in some musical expressions of a selected group of Canada’s First Peoples, transposes the listeners back to the roots of Canada’s inhabitants.

Francophonos, Module III, inspired by French Canadian musical structures and presented in a perpetual rapid movement, suggests musical structures of French Canadians’ folk songs and melodies.

Anglophonos, Module IV, is based on the well-known song, ‘Southern Cross’, of English folk origin, presented polyphonically.

Canada Altogether, Module V, celebrating Canada’s rich and unique multiculturalism, is a combination of the musical structures of all today’s Canadians into a positive approach to the New Millennium.

Celebration, Module VI, inspired by the rhythmic and melodic basis of “O Canada’ - Calixa Lavallée’s nation-binding hymn - brings a culminating set of polyphonic and harmonic synthesis.

“O Canada, Long Life et longue vie !”, an original text, sung by all performers, concludes this Fresco. With MultiMusic Canada for the New Millennium, placed on a stage in the traditional concert hall, I wished to crystalize the amazing ‘cornucopia’ of sung expressions that we share in Canada.” - Maya Badian
