CONCERT CELEBRATES HEALEY WILLAN ANNIVERSARY

Two outstanding choirs will perform the sacred choral and organ music of Canadian composer Healey Willan on Friday, February 16 at 8:00 pm at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, 477 Manning Avenue, Toronto. Canadian Composer Healey Willan died 50 years ago on that day in 1968.

The Gallery Choir of St. Mary Magdalene, joined by the choir of St. Thomas’s Church, Huron Street, Toronto will sing beloved choral works including Behold the Tabernacle and Gloria Deo. Music Directors Andrew Adair and Matthew Larkin will share conducting and playing duties along with Organist Simon Walker. Willan’s great organ works will be included: the Introduction, passacaglia and fugue in E flat minor, the Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, and the Passacaglia and Fugue in E minor. Mary Willan Mason, Willan’s daughter, and former Governor General, the Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson will present brief reminiscences.

Willan became organist and choirmaster at St. Mary Magdalene’s in 1921 and remained so until his death. He was associated with the Arts and Letters Club, the Royal Canadian College of Organists and the University of Toronto, where he taught many of Canada’s future composers. He also composed more than 800 works including operas, symphonies, chamber works, and compositions for band, orchestra, organ and piano.

He is best known for the masses and motets composed for the parish church and later performed around the world. By continuing to value plainsong and renaissance music, St. Mary Magdalene’s also honours and continues his musical legacy during services on February 18th at the 11:00 mass; and at evensong at 4:30 where choir alumni will also rehearse and sing under former Willan Chorister Giles Bryant.

There is no admission charge. Voluntary donations support the ministries of the parish.
