The New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia (NEWS), under the batons of resident conductor Raymond Baril and special guest conductor Dr. Dale Lonis, is pleased to announce Northern Dreams and Fantasies taking place on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 2:30PM in the Myer Horowitz Theatre, University of Alberta (8900 114 Street).

Northern Dreams and Fantasies is meant to present the listener with a musical look into the mysteries that surround our life’s journeys — from night into day, dreaming into wakefulness, and through the exploration of the great unknowns. This odyssey culminates in the performance of the work Frozen Cathedral by John Mackey that, through the musical depiction of the mountains of the great North, celebrates both the great joys and the inevitable sorrows that life brings. Also included on the programme is Frenergy by Canadian composer John Estacio and the lush, haunting chorale Sleep by Eric Whitacre.*

This programme utilizes percussion instruments to a much greater extent than most other wind band concerts. It requires a vast array of instruments including various bells, water glasses, waterphones, crotales, and bowed gongs. In addition, instruments such as piano, celeste and harp are used to provide the ethereal sounds and musical imagery that one might expect to accompany words like “dream”, “sleep”, “morning star”, and “frozen mountain-scapes”.

Many of the pieces require as many as ten percussionists, harp and piano, and a fully complemented wind ensemble that includes additional flutes (including alto and bass flutes), bassoons (including contrabassoon), bass clarinets (including contrabass clarinet), and trombones.

Tickets for Northern Dreams and Fantasies are $20 for Adults and $15 for Students/Seniors, and can be purchased at the door, or in advance from NEWS members. Children (12 and Under) are FREE.
