This is one of my first vocal pieces, a song cycle that I wrote for my
sister Zohreh based on texts written by a colleague of mine, Emma
Hooper. This was an early piece and in many ways an exploration of
what I saw as the possibilities of the artsong genre. Throughout it is
energetic and restless, and l think it is the first piece I wrote that
was well balanced and musically coherent. As such, this is the piece I
would consider my opus 1.
